Saracens Cricket Club

Nazeing Common v Saracens Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 25 May 2014 at 2.00pm
Saracens Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs

Match report Saracens travelled to a surprisingly dry Nazeing on Sunday, considering the amount of rain that had fallen the previous few days and over night. After a negotiated toss, we took the field and after 8 overs were staring down the barrel of a huge score as the hosts had reached 60 for 0.

Tricky then picked up the first wicket, closely followed by a 1st wicket for debutant TP and then another one for Tricky and the score was 80-3. Some tight overs followed from Dinghy and another debutant Theo, and then 2 quick wickets from Dinghy with the score on 100-5 and Drinks. This also coincided with the late arrival of Bun, fresh from work (with a W nomination for being late). A few more tight overs followed by some lusty blows took the score on 140, before Bun and the improving Fud were bought into the attack and proceeded to take the last 5 wickets in quick time. 2 of them rather fortuitous, however it meant that Nazeing were dismissed for 164.

Our innings didn't have the greatest of starts, with Woody, Jim and Pete all dismissed cheaply, leaving the score at 16-3. Our 3rd debutant Conrad and Tricky started to rebuild, before Conrad was run out for 20. Theo then came and went for 15 quick runs, followed by the even quicker dismissal of TP, leaving us on 58 - 5.

A father/son partnership of 80 in 23 overs from Dinghy (30) and Tricky (a well constructed/bit lucky 57) got us to within 27 with 12 overs remaining, so we were in the box seat requiring only just over 2 an over. Dinghy then holed out to Long on, followed 5 balls later by Tricky (also caught at long) left us on 138 for 8, and our hopes resting on Bun and Fud.

Last Season's batting hero could only find the hands of mid wicket with his first real attacking shot, and then Fud was LBW and we were all out for 138.

A pretty good performance with the ball and good recovery with the bat after a poor start puts us in good stead going into next week at Chingford. Our 3 debutants (TP, Theo and Conrad) all made solid contributions and we look forward to seeing a bit more of them.

W Award = Jim Wafford - Entertaining in the field and a 1st baller - lots of umpiring (got cold at the end and gave Fud out).
